A Corpse Beside the Seaside can be found in the Mysteries, Midsummer Sun and Murder anthology.
Private detective Izzy Palmer is going for a weekend away at the British seaside. She plans to walk on the beach, eat very melty ice creams, paddle in the sea and investigate a nice sunny murder.
Let’s hear Benedict’s answers to our questions…
When writing a series, how do you keep things fresh for both your readers and you?
I have two mystery series, my “Izzy Palmer Mysteries” which are set today and “Lord Edgington Investigates…” which is set in the 1920s. By alternating back and forth between the two timelines, I think it helps me to have fresh ideas and hopefully people appreciate the contrast between the modern, zany series and the very traditional one.
Can you give us some insight into what makes you main character tick?
Izzy became a detective because she loves reading murder mysteries (and especially Agatha Christie novels) so much. She’s obsessed with them, and her knowledge of the books often helps her solve her own cases. She’s also a bit of an introvert (unlike me!) and so she’s not always great at talking to people, which I think in some ways helps her to get the cases solved quicker, so that she can get back to reading her books!
Does one of the main characters hold a special place in your heart? If so, why?
Yes, definitely. Izzy’s best friend Ramesh is completely bizarre and over the top and I love coming up with funny new ways to involve him in the story. He’s a massive drama queen, has a number of unusual obsessions, but sometime manages to come up with helpful suggestions or at least talks enough nonsense for Izzy to switch off from reality and focus on the investigation.
As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
As I write in my office overlooking the fields, birds of prey like red kites, Egyptian Vultures and Golden Eagles perform air shows outside my window just for me. So, If I could have an animal sitting on my shoulder giving me advice on plot and punctuation, it would have to be an owl, as they are surely the wisest of all creatures… according to Winne the Pooh at least.
