Meet R.B. Marshall

R.B. Marshall hails from Scotland, and her mysteries are also set in Scotland. Beautiful landscapes, glorious castles, colorful characters and perplexing puzzles are the major elements of her stories. R.B. also writes fantasy and woman’s fiction (Roz Marshall) and Historical Romance (Belle McInnes). Be sure to join her NewsLetter and follow on Facebook!

She writes the Highland Horse Whisperer Mysteries and is the force behind our anthology, Mysteries, Midsummer Sun and Murders. R.B love to spend time with her horse.

For the Midsummer anthology, R.B. Marshall wrote Picnics, Peers, and Poison, the prequel to a new series, The White Rose Tearoom Historical Mysteries
It’s set in 1893, and features a spunky, clever, female sleuth, Lady Persephone Merrit (but call her Persi!). She’s from a noble family that’s fallen on hard times, likes to cycle in the Scottish countryside and enjoys taking photographs with her Kodak box camera.

Our author spent time, all in research of course!,  The Willow Tearoom on Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow, which my ‘White Rose Tearoom’ will be based on.

The Highland Horse Whisperer Mysteries is set in the fictional village of Glengowrie in Perthshire, on the edge of the Scottish Highlands – see the photo below for the real-life village that is partly the inspiration.

It’s Daisy Linh’s turn!

Daisy Linh lives in Maine with her husband, but she hails from “the sunburned land down under”. A lover of Murder She Wrote (who isn’t!) and Columbo, writing whodunnits was a perfect fit for this author. She writes the Barossa Valley Cozy Mystery series. You can find her books on Amazon, her Website and follow her on Facebook.

Daisy’s book that is included in the Mysteries, Midsummer Sun and Murders anthology is Rose and Risk
A little wine never hurt anyone. Yet..

Let’s find out a bit more about our author…

Where is your favorite vacation spot? Beach, Resort or Poolside? Isn’t it funny how our tastes change? When I was young, i would go to New York or Paris or Bngkok at every chance I could get. I liked BIG BIG cities, the more people, the more things to see and do the better. Now my bucket list trip, and hopefully in the card soon, is an over the water ocean villa in the maldives. Sunshine. Peace. Tropical fruit. Cocktails and a good book. But I’ll still take the cities kind of vacation. Travel is my weakness. It’s been a hard few years!

Does one of the main characters hold a special place in your heart? The main character in my current series (Barossa Valley Mysteries) is Jasmine Mai and she is everything I’ve always wanted to be. Confident, holds her culture (were both Vietnamese Australian!) very close to her heart, owns a winery (wine supply for life!), doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty to do what she feels is right. Hopefully in my next life I can come back as her. Is anything in your book based on real-life experiences or purely all imagination? This might be strange for a writer to say but – my imagination isn’t always so reliable!! The stories come to me from some far away place, but the details to root it into reality and make them believable come straight out of a day in my life. Chances are a lot of the insults/compliments that come out of my characters’ mouths have shown up in my life. And when I write them into my book, I can never resist a giggle that someone I know will read it an remember that it first came out of their mouth.

Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you. I was on the third season of Masterchef Australia!I entered on a whim one sleepless night and after a hundred rounds of auditions, I made it to the top 50. From there – I was unceremoniously kicked out (I don’t do desserts!- I mean, I eat them, I don’t cook them) but had one of the absolute best experiences of my entire life. If you’ve ever seen Just Zumbo on Netflix, you’ll know the dessert king Adriana Zumbo – he’s the one who kicked me out. Love/hate relationship there for sure!

It’s Time to Talk to HILLARY AVIS

Author Hillary Avis (and Friend!)

Hillary Avis writes several Cozy Mystery series, including; The Clucks and Clues Cozy Mysteries, The Magic Library Mysteries, The Souperb Culinary Cozy Mysteries and the Neela Durante Mysteries. You can find out all her book on her Website. Hillary lives in Eugene, Oregon with her family and LOTS of animals! Hillary loves to bake bread, make pottery watch British TV shows and has a fondness for a good cup of coffee. You can also find her books on Amazon. Be sure to follow her on Facebook.

Pre-order the Anthology Now!

Hillary Avis is sharing her book No Egg to Stand On
Truly O’Toole wakes up the morning after her fiftieth birthday party with a few fuzzy memories, a raging hangover, and a whole lot of questions. For example: Who is the dead woman in her bathtub? How did her best friend, Fran, lose half her hair overnight? And why the heck is there a chicken in her purse?

While we’re waiting for the answers to the book’s questions, lets hear Hillary’s answers to my questions…

Where is your favorite vacation spot?
I’m definitely a beach gal. About fifteen years ago, I was lucky enough to stay on Maui in a beachfront rental that had a huge lawn between the house and the ocean. In the daytime, the grass was full of feral chickens eating the fallen mangos. At night, it would populate with giant toads! It was wild and wonderful experience, and not at all what I expected from a beach house.

Can you give us some insight into what makes your main character tick?
Truly has had bad luck since the day she was born with (as her grandpa loved to tell her) too much red hair and not enough sense. Anything that could go wrong, has, including losing her beloved husband when she was only forty-five. As a result, she doesn’t believe in moping around. Truly is out to have the most fun possible because she knows that bad stuff is always going to happen. She figures she might as well enjoy life in the meantime. Want to karaoke until 2 a.m. on a Wednesday? Crash a weekend wedding to sample the open tiki bar? Take a spontaneous road trip to track down a potential cold-blooded killer? Truly will say yes to any adventure.

What comes first, the plot or the characters?
Main characters always come first for me. Writing a book takes a lot longer than reading one, so I have to really enjoy a character to want to spend that much time with her! Then the plot emerges, and side characters show up to help it along.

As a writer, what animal would you choose as your mascot?
My readers would probably guess a chicken, since chickens feature so often in my mysteries. But I’d say my mascot is a cat. Cats spend a lot of their time curled up and dreaming, and (day)dream time is critical for authors and other creative types. I might look like I’m being lazy, all curled up in a chair with my cup of tea, but I’m actually working!

Let’s hear from Benedict Brown

Benedict lives in Spain with his family, but is a native of South London. This author has always loved writing, it was his favorite subject in primary school! Benedict writes the Izzy Palmer Mysteries and the Lord Edgington Investigates series. You can find out much more from his Website and purchase all his books there. And don’t forget to follow him on Facebook!

A Corpse Beside the Seaside can be found in the Mysteries, Midsummer Sun and Murder anthology.

Private detective Izzy Palmer is going for a weekend away at the British seaside. She plans to walk on the beach, eat very melty ice creams, paddle in the sea and investigate a nice sunny murder.

Let’s hear Benedict’s answers to our questions…

When writing a series, how do you keep things fresh for both your readers and you?

I have two mystery series, my “Izzy Palmer Mysteries” which are set today and “Lord Edgington Investigates…” which is set in the 1920s. By alternating back and forth between the two timelines, I think it helps me to have fresh ideas and hopefully people appreciate the contrast between the modern, zany series and the very traditional one.

Can you give us some insight into what makes you main character tick?
Izzy became a detective because she loves reading murder mysteries (and especially Agatha Christie novels) so much. She’s obsessed with them, and her knowledge of the books often helps her solve her own cases. She’s also a bit of an introvert (unlike me!) and so she’s not always great at talking to people, which I think in some ways helps her to get the cases solved quicker, so that she can get back to reading her books!

Does one of the main characters hold a special place in your heart? If so, why?
Yes, definitely. Izzy’s best friend Ramesh is completely bizarre and over the top and I love coming up with funny new ways to involve him in the story. He’s a massive drama queen, has a number of unusual obsessions, but sometime manages to come up with helpful suggestions or at least talks enough nonsense for Izzy to switch off from reality and focus on the investigation.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
As I write in my office overlooking the fields, birds of prey like red kites, Egyptian Vultures and Golden Eagles perform air shows outside my window just for me. So, If I could have an animal sitting on my shoulder giving me advice on plot and punctuation, it would have to be an owl, as they are surely the wisest of all creatures… according to Winne the Pooh at least.

Meet Megan Mayfair

Megan lives in Melbourne, Australia with her husband and three young children, and works in public relations. When not writing fiction or press releases, she enjoys spending time with her family, drinking coffee, playing guitar, doing yoga, and searching for the perfect shade of red lipstick. Megan writing includes mystery, romance and humor. She writes the Cafe Chronicles, Lana Honeywell Mysteries, The Tangled Vines Saga, and the Lemon Tree Bay Mysteries. You can find her books on her Website, or on Amazon. Be sure to follow her on Facebook, Goodreads and Bookbub.

Megan’s book in the anthology of Mystery, Midsummer Sun and Murders;

Sunshine and Suspicion
All Lana wanted was a year off to find herself – but it turns out that relaxation is going to be murder.

Lana is a celebrity publicist nursing a broken heart after her soap opera actor fiancé ran off with his bombshell co-star. Escaping the drama and speculation and a rather messy meltdown at a star-studded movie premiere, she relocates to an adorable tiny house in the high country town of Cherry Grove.
Her plan is simple: a year of zen, and no men. Lana quickly learns the rugged beauty of the landscape is home to scandals and secrets juicier than the plots of the television series and movies her clients star in. And that’s before she meets a gorgeous park ranger called Wyatt…
Finding herself. Solving murders. Falling in love. This year is about to get far more interesting than Lana could have predicted.

Let’s find out more about Megan…

Everyone takes a tote back with them when they head out for a day at the beach, what is in yours?
Plenty of sunscreen, water bottle, towel, sunglasses, large hat, Kindle, phone and snacks.

When writing a series, how do you keep things fresh for both your readers and also yourself?
New twists that make the character have to do something outside what we have seen them do – a new job, a move– is always interesting. It shakes up the character but also gives the audience a fresh insight into someone they know so well. How have they handled a sudden shift in their lives? What repercussions does it have on their relationships, work, community?

I also love giving new plotlines for supporting characters – it’s fun to explore their worlds a little and allow them to take centre stage.

Is anything in your book based on real-life experiences or purely all imagination?
My background is in public relations – nothing quite as glam as what Lana Honeywell does with movies and television, but there may be a few bits and pieces of professional experience that make their way into the book.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
The bee – a good luck totem for being productive in my work and finding work that is fulfilling.

Let’s see what Joann Keder is up to!

Award-winning author, Joann Keder spent most of her years in the Midwest, growing up and raising a family on the Great Plains of Nebraska. She worked for sixteen years as a piano teacher before returning to school to receive a master’s degree in creative writing. A mid-life move to the Pacific Northwest lead her to re-examine her priorities. She now creates stories about life and relationships in small towns while her ever-patient husband encourages her on. Joann writes the Piney Falls Mysteries, Emory Bing Mysteries and the Charming Mysteries. You can find all her books on her Website and be sure to follow her on Facebook.

For the Mysteries, Midsummer Sun and Murders anthology, Joann has included her book

DASTARDLY DEEDS AT DOOMSDAY BEACH.
A relaxing vacation turns deadly when Gemini discovers a body on the beach.

Now for a few questions and answers…

Can you give us some insight into what makes you main character tick?
Gemini has always given more than she’s received. In her many years working at the hardware store, she spent long days working with her husband and long nights giving Sophia all of her remaining energy. When she went to work at the law firm, her talents were undervalued and she was sidelined because of her age. Now, she’s trying to enjoy her golden years and is pleased to be valued for what she can offer to any investigation.

Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you.
I taught piano lessons for sixteen years. I experienced terrible performance anxiety, in part due to horrible childhood experiences. For that reason, I offered to sit beside my students on the stage during recitals to alleviate their anxiety.

Is anything in your book based on real-life experiences or purely all imagination?
I’ve known many Sophias in my life: entitled and never satisfied. It’s not necessarily all bad. Sometimes they are loving people who just need to feel heard.

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
It all depends on what I’m writing. For “Welcome to Piney Falls,” I spent several months learning about the canning industry in Astoria, Oregon. Many times, I take advantage of the encyclopedic knowledge of those around me. Everyone has a lifetime of learning about at least one topic. A phone call or email is usually enough to ascertain what I need to learn from them. Sometimes I’m doing a “fly by the seat of my pants” story, which involves learning as I go.

It’s Time to Chat with CARLY WINTER

Carly Winter writes the Sedona Spirit Cozy Mystery series, the Heywood Herbalist Cozy Mysteries, the Tri-Town Murders series and has new new series out caller Killer Skies Mysteries. She is also a romance author under another pen name. She loves dogs, wine and chocolate and lives in Arizona. You can follow Carly on Amazon and find out more about her and her books from her Website.

Carly is adding her book, Dandelions and Deception to the Mysteries, Midsummer Sun and Murders anthology…
She knows who killed her husband… she doesn’t know how to prove it.
As Los Angeles experiences one of its worst summer heatwaves, soap opera star Samantha Rathbone’s life goes up in flames.
When she finds her husband dead, she realizes the killer is one of Hollywood’s most powerful men. It comes down to his word against hers, and the police side with him.
While her life crumbles around her, she discovers the reason behind her husband’s murder and is quickly shunned by Hollywood. But will she be able to find the evidence to nail the killer, or will he go free?

Let’s here how Carley answers our questions…

Where is your favorite vacation spot? Beach, Resort or Poolside?
Since I don’t live anywhere near the ocean, I love our annual vacation to a beach resort in Cancun. The ocean renews me inside and out.

Everyone takes a tote back with them when they head out for a day at the beach, what is in yours?Sunscreen, towel, a book, and water.

Can you give us some insight into what makes you main character tick?
In this novella, my main character quickly becomes blacklisted by Hollywood over her husband’s actions. She has her life burned to the ground, both literally and figuratively, and hopes to regain her place in the community once the killer is caught.

Is anything in your book based on real-life experiences or purely all imagination?
Well, I’ve never been a soap opera star and my husband is still alive and kicking. I have been ostracized before though, so I’m experienced in the hurt and humiliation that brings.

Meet Michele Pariza Wacek

Michele Pariza Wacek is an award winning author of Suspense Mysteries (Secrets of Redemption), Cozy Mysteries (Charlie Kingsley Mysteries) and Psychological Thrillers (The Riverview Mysteries). Michele has done what few authors do, and connected all of her series together. Michele loves to read, watch football and participate in dog sports with her dog Cassie. She and her husband live in the mountains of Prescott, AZ. You can find out more from her Website (and download a free book!), and follow her on Facebook and Amazon.

Michele’s book in the anthology is called Loch Ness Murder. Her funny, twisty cozy mystery series, The Charlie Kingsley Mysteries, is set in the 1990s and is a spin off from her Secrets of Redemption series.

Loch Ness Murder
It wouldn’t be Redemption without something weird going on in one of the lakes.

Let’s have a chat with Michelle…

Where is your favorite vacation spot? Beach, Resort or Poolside?
Can I have all three? My favorite vacation spot is in at a resort in Cabo, which definitely has all three and then some.

Everyone takes a tote back with them when they head out for a day at the beach, what is in yours?Years ago, I would probably have at least two books, if not more. (After all, I might finish the book I’m reading and maybe I won’t like the second book I brought. What would I do? I might be bookless!) Now, with my Kindle, life is MUCH easier as I don’t need to take a second suitcase just filled with books on vacation. (Although I always double check I brought my charger with me.)

Okay, now that we have the books taken care of, my tote also has sunscreen, couple of bottles of water, a hat and enough money to buy a snack. (Hey, I’m on vacation, I get to go buy whatever junk food I’m in the mood to eat as calories don’t count on vacation.)

Are there any secrets from the book (that aren’t in the blurb), you can share with your readers?Redemption, Wisconsin, is a haunted town with a dark past that has a light side and a dark side. It’s not paranormal as everything is rooted in things that could happen in real life, but there are certainly a lot of unexplained happenings in Redemption. If you prefer to keep your mysteries light, then the Charlie Kingsley Mysteries are perfect for you. If you don’t mind a little darkness or edge, check out the psychological suspense books. (Remember, all the Redemption books are clean, no sex, swearing, gore and very little violence.)

Does one of the main characters hold a special place in your heart? If so, why?
Charlie Kingsley. When she first came into being, she didn’t even have a name. She was the dead aunt who willed her house to Becca in Book 1 of the Secrets of Redemption series. Then, I gave her the wrong name (Lottie) which she wasn’t happy about. Finally, we got that straightened out, and in Book 3 of that series, it became clear that Charlie had quite the backstory on how she ended up in Redemption, Wisconsin, so her story because Books 4 and 5. I thought I was moving on from Charlie at that point, but she had other plans and the next thing I know, I’m writing a twisty, cozy mystery series starring her. I have no idea what the future holds with Charlie, the only thing I’m sure about at this point is I’m not the one in charge.
